Investigating Earthquakes
through
Regional Seismicity
Design of the Module
This SCEC educational module has been designed to provide students
with the opportunity to interactively investigate the nature of
earthquakes. The module has been divided into three major sections,
"What is an Earthquake?", "The Distribution of Earthquakes",
and "Measuring Earthquakes". Each section presents background material
and interactive learning activities allowing students to understand such
characteristics of earthquakes as their associated faults, rates of
occurrence, magnitudes, and geographic distribution.
Primary Concepts Covered
The module has been designed under the unifying concept of "The
Earth is constantly changing".
Section concepts are further broken down to conform to
a storyline; the subconcepts within
each section are covered on a separate page,
and linked to the appropriate pages and activities that elaborate
upon those concepts.
